Cooper City High School’s Professional Learning Communities

As part of Broward County Public Schools’ High School Reform Initiative, Cooper City High School has developed and implemented five professional learning communities.  The five professional learning communities focus on the One Voice – High School Reform Initiative, Writing Across the Curriculum, Reading Across the Curriculum, Technology Integration, Ninth Grade Transition, and Mathematics.  Opportunities for collegial collaboration and staff development training are provided through these professional learning communities on teacher planning days and on early release days.  In addition, faculty members voluntarily participate in such events during planning periods and after school.

The One Voice – High School Reform Initiative aims to increase academic rigor, while improving the learning environment and enhancing student performance.  Writing across the curriculum strives to raise the FCAT Writing scores and technical writing skills of all students.  Reading Across the Curriculum focuses on the implementation of high yield instructional strategies in order to increase students’ reading comprehension and high order thinking skills.  Technology Integration both encourages and trains teachers to incorporate the use technology into classroom instruction. The Ninth Grade Transition Academy seeks to ensure the success of all 9th grade students by increasing the personalization of learning and to increase their level of academic achievement.  The Mathematics Learning Community provides a forum where faculty members share best instructional practices and high yield instructional strategies. As evidenced through the efforts of our professional learning communities, Cooper City High School has embraced Broward County Public School’s High School Reform Initiative in an effort to enhance the educational experiences of our students.

Ninth Grade Transition Academy

Cooper City High School’s Ninth Grade Leadership Team has worked collaboratively to develop and implement a Ninth Grade Transition Academy.  The Ninth Grade Transition Academy is affectionately referred to as The Freshmen Corral.  Teachers within the Ninth Grade Transition Academy share common academic and behavioral expectations.  It addition, 9th grade teachers share a common disciplinary plan, adhering to common rules and consequences.  The Ninth Grade Leadership Team meets monthly to collaborate on how best to serve and promote the success of Cooper City High School’s 9th grade students.
